Michigan Real Estate Pre and Post Licensing Requirements

Steps to Obtain a Michigan Real Estate Salesperson License


1 Complete Pre-Licensure Education
  • Take an LARA approved 40-hour Pre-Licensure Course covering real estate fundamentals.

  • Or explore the convenient on-demand 40-hour course offered by Michigan Realtors@ and The CE Shop (click banner below to learn more).

2 Apply for Your License
  • Submit your license application to the State of Michigan through the Michigan Licensing and Regulatory website.

3 Schedule & Pass the Exam
  • Once you receive an email notification of application approval, schedule your licensing exam through PSI Services, LLC at an authorized testing center.

4 Confirm Employing Broker Sponsorship
  • Secure sponsorship from a licensed Michigan employing broker.

5 Start Your Career
  • Once you pass the exam and confirm broker sponsorship, your license will be issued and you can begin practicing as a licensed Michigan Real Estate Salesperson.

Steps to Maintain Your License


1 Earn Required Credits
  • Complete 18 continuing education (CE) credit hours every 3-year licensing cycle.

  • Complete least 2 law-specific CE credit hours each year.

2 Know Your Expiration Date
  • If licensed after August 2020, or renewed effective November 1, 2021, your license has an individual expiration date based on your original license issue date.

  • This expiration date now determines:

    • Annual deadline completing law-specific CE.

    • Every 3-year deadline for full license renewal.

3 Check License Status
  • Use theUse the MiPlus lookup tool view your license expiration date and details.

4 Complete Approved Courses
  • Since November 1, 2018, CE courses must be certified by CE Marketplace.

    The State of MichiganThe State of Michigan no longer approves or tracks CE courses directly.

Steps to Obtaining a Michigan Real Estate Broker License


1Meet Experience Requirements
  • Have at least 3 years of full-time experience as a licensed real estate salesperson, or equivalent qualifying experience

2 Complete Required Broker Education
  • Complete 90 clock hours of approved broker coursework within 36 months prior to application (unless licensed continuously).

3 Pass the Broker Licensing Exam
  • Schedule and pass the Michigan Real Estate Broker License Exam through PSI Services, LLC.

4 Maintain Your Broker License
  • Complete 18 hours of continuing education every 3-year license cycle.

  • A minimum of 2 hours of legal education is required per licensing year.
