Washington D.C. Hill Visits
The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), once again held their Midyear Governance Meeting in Washington, D.C., the week of May 14th. The purpose of the trip is to allow REALTORS® from associations around the country a chance to meet with their legislators to express concern or gratitude on federal legislation that impacts the real estate industry. This year, the Michigan Association of REALTORS® (MAR), had almost 200 members attending the event.
The Midyear visits to Washington would not be effective without the MAR Federal Political Coordinators (FPC). The FPCs’ duties are to serve as liaisons between members of Congress and the 32,000 REALTOR® members of MAR. They are also responsible for keeping the meetings in D.C. running smoothly and on point. Most of the FPCs moderated their meetings and invited other members who live or do business in that Congressional district to participate as well. Members were encouraged to voice their opinions on the issues facing the real estate industry such as the rising cost of providing health care, keeping banks out of the real estate profession and making homeownership more accessible to potential buyers. These meetings allowed legislators to come face to face with the individuals whom they will impact when they cast their votes on any number of legislative issues. Overall, the Midyear visits proved to be highly effective in getting those in the real estate industry politically involved and aware of the legislative process in our nation’s capital. REALTORS® in Michigan have a strong voice on issues being debated in Congress as do over 1 million members nationally. The Midyear Capitol Hill visits are open to any REALTOR® who would like to attend, so please keep this trip in mind for next year
