DLEG Offers Online Licensing System

DLEG has recently mailed out the renewal forms to all real estate licensees including broker and branch office license renewals. DLEG is using a brand new online licensing system and MAR is anticipating you may get questions about the system from your members. The first time a licensee uses the system to renew a salesperson, individual broker or associate broker’s license, he/she must register and create a user name and password. In order to register, three data pieces must be in DLEG’s system – the license number, SSN and birth date. If a member gets a “person not found” message when trying to register, advise the member to call DLEG at 517.241.9288 and have the missing data added to the system. Within 24 hours, the member will be able to register and renew online.

MAR staff has explored the system. There are some quirky error messages produced when faulty credit card information is entered. DLEG is working to clarify these messages. In the meantime, if you receive calls, you can suggest that the member try the payment screen again, renew via the hard copy or contact the department.

A licensee can renew online before meeting the CE requirement. The license IS NOT issued, however, until the CE requirement is met for both the individual licensee and the employing broker.

For a salesperson, individual broker, or associate broker license (licenses beginning with 6501, 6502 or 6504):

Go to www.michigan.gov/elicense <http://www.michigan.gov/elicense> . Click on “renew your license”. Follow the prompts to renew the license. The page will provide instructions to create a user ID and password.

For the broker licenses (licenses beginning with 6505):

Go to www.michigan.gov/elicense <http://www.michigan.gov/elicense> . Click on “renew your license”. The user name is the 10-digit license number to be renewed. The password is the last 6 digits of that same license number. Follow the prompts to renew the license.

Emotions Take Control When Selling FSBO

Editor's Note: I have heard many comments from local associations about how they can help their members communicate better about why the general public should use a REALTOR®. I came across this article and thought it put a different perspective on this issue. Hopefully this will be helpful to you and your members. Enjoy!

Why hiring an agent may be better alternative

By Bernice Ross
2006 MAR Convention Speaker

You're an agent about to sell your own home. Would you hire yourself to take the listing?

Recently, my husband and I decided that we want to build a new home. We picked out the lot and are in the process of finalizing the plans. An important issue we must now address is how to handle the sale of our current property. I've been in the real estate business since 1978. During that time, I've represented some of the wealthiest and most sophisticated sellers in the world. I speak all over the country on how to generate more leads, market your listings, and earn a full commission. If you were in my shoes, would you hire another agent to list your home when you clearly had the skill set and the license to sell it yourself?

The way you answer this question provides a clear snapshot of how you view the real estate profession and the value that a professional Realtor brings to the table. If you answered that you would hire the best Realtor you could find, you are clearly aware of each of the following facts:

1. You can never negotiate as well for yourself as someone who is not emotionally involved in the transaction.

2. Like most sellers, you probably lack the objectivity to see your property and the market with the same detachment as a highly qualified listing agent.

3. Your presence during showings may scare off buyers who prefer not to have the seller hovering over them as they view the property.

4. Buyers and their agents are reluctant to share objective feedback with you.
